Prolonged Exposure

Prolonged Exposure (PE) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach used to treat PTSD and trauma-related disorders, and is considered the leading behavioral treatment for PTSD.

PE involves gradually confronting traumatic memories, emotions, and situations that an individual has been avoiding. This is achieved through imaginal exposure (vividly imagining and recounting the trauma) and in vivo exposure (facing real-life triggers). Over time, clients experience a reduction in fear and distress associated with these events, enabling them to process trauma in a safe, controlled environment with reduced emotional activation. By confronting these memories, emotions, and situations, clients regain control, build resilience, and work toward lasting recovery.
